May Bird and The Ever After

May Bird and the Ever After, the first book in the Ever After trilogy, tells the tale of a 10-year-old girl named May, her kitty named Somber Cat and the horrifying adventures they have in Ever After, the world of the dead.

This was a truly fantastic tale of adventure and friendship. At first glance it seems to be such a confusing tale at the beginning because you can't really tell how it's going to continue or where it's going to end up and it at times gets a little slow-paced. But putting this book down because you didn't enjoy the first few chapters would be a terrible mistake. I've made this mistake at least three times before I forced myself to continue reading it. I am so glad I did!

SPOILER:

May Bird provides all that I love most in children's fiction: A strong female character with plenty of wit. In this first novel of the series we follow a young, misunderstood girl who gets pulled into the underworld. She must use all of her courage and strength to find a way out before the evil spirits chasing her succeed in trapping her in the underworld forever. With the help of some unexpected friends- and her loyal cat, May travels through the land of the dead and, learns to have confidence in herself, discovers that she is stronger than she ever imagined.

END OF SPOILER:

I loved this book and fully plan on reading the rest of the series. It was imaginative, fast-paced and wonderfully eerie. If only I could get my hands on the rest of the books, mostly out of stock right now. Sad.

Jodi Lynn Anderson is a brilliant author and I'm keen to read more of her work.
